Introduction to the sun-moon path, it's of a nature of a unitary path of approaching samsara and nirvana.. It's a path whereby one's striving against reality is dissolved into an immaculate four-pointed mandala..
The two states which are each defined with two points represent the state of the individual self influencing the external reality via internal projection, and the state whereby the individual self is dissolved inwardly into the immaculate Dharmakaya.
Externally this manifests as the Nirmanakaya, internally the Dharmakaya is projected, and the Sambhogakaya is the intermediary between the two states.
When the adept travels in the external direction, he or she integrates their karma, and performs tantric acts in order to subdue reality to the will.
When the adept travels in the interior direction, the external reality is reflected into the dharmakaya and the microcausm of consciousness is balanced into the mandala vision of the dharmakaya.
In this way both internal and external are manifested in a two-fold way in relation to the solar path (action, body, exertion of will), and the lunar path (mind, reflection, integration into wholeness).
Through repeated application of the mandala-formulae, within the philosophical framework of Mahayana, the personality is developed by a sort of sifting process to extract the wisdom one has gathered in life. At the same time the wrong views are sorted out, harmful habits are sublimated, and thereby one's bad karma is emptied.
At the same time, the light of the Dharmakaya begins to poke through to irradiate your heart with wisdom and compassion, filling you with buddha-qualities.
That is the sun-moon path.
This formulaic approach acts like a wheel to reshape the material already present in your person, rather than acting like a cookie cutter in the manner of normal interpretations of religion trying to stuff human nature into a predesigned mold.
